Ken and his mother went to see his father off on the ‘Empress of Britain’ and met the Maori Battalion. Ken discusses the depression and farming practices he adopted and his views on farming. He looks at farming in the earlier days and now in his son James time.

Overview In this interview, Tom tells of family history, his education and employment history. He describes his time overseas during WW2 in Egypt, North Africa and Italy over a 3-year period. On return to New Zealand Tom tells of employment and purchase of a farm at Lochiel as well as talking of his interests which included: playing rugby and horse racing. He both raised and owned race horses.

KENNEDY Irene Margaret interviewed by Joy Lietze

Overview This interview covers Irene's early life in Browns and her time in the Women's War Service Auxiliary working in a flax mill in Tapanui. After the war she remained in Tapanui and worked first in the hospital and then in the Post Office where she worked as the local postie for 18 years. Irene was very keen on fishing, she fished actively for over 50 years and enjoyed meeting interesting people along the riverbank. Irene was Area Representative for Student Travel Schools.

Overview Roland talks of his family history and settlement at Bayswater on their 1000 acre farm called Studleigh. He looks at the use of draft horses on the farm, the depression years, the growing and processing of linen flax for the war effort. After the war the crops changed to wheat, barley, and oats. He describes the care and contribution of sheep, horses and dogs. Roland mentions bus services and the Thornbury Vintage Museum; and reflects on his life.
